Our views on doula support in the postpartum period

Welcoming a new baby into the family is an incredibly exciting time, but it can also come with its challenges. Whether this is baby number one or five, your family dynamic is about to shift and change. The postpartum period should be a time filled with love and support, and of mothering the new mother and family. Historically, the postpartum period has been honoured as a time of slowing down, healing and adjusting. In Chinese culture, the first 40 days postpartum is referred to as “the confinement”. It is viewed as a crucial time during which new mothers are to be taken care of and nourished, in order to allow them to focus on bonding with their baby and transitioning smoothly into motherhood. Nowadays and in our society, life is more complicated and busy than ever before. Many families depend on both partners to earn income to support their household and live far away from their extended families and support people. This lifestyle change has created a huge support gap, which is where postpartum doulas come in. We fill this gap in care by providing non-judgmental support, knowledge and encouragement to new parents. As postpartum doulas, we are trained in postpartum adjustment, newborn characteristics, care, feeding and development, as well as the promotion of parent-infant bonding. We join you in your home during the fourth trimester to provide encouragement for your family in developing and implementing your own parenting style through validation and support of your intuitive ability to nurture your baby.

Our postpartum team is currently serving families in White Rock, Surrey & Langley only.

How Our Postpartum Doula Support Works

Daynah & Berkley provide support to our postpartum families as a team! Daynah is our daytime postpartum doula and Berkley is our overnight postpartum doula. Depending on your family’s needs, you may work with one or both of them. We provide one-in home prenatal meeting to get familiar with your family and home, establish what your needs might be when baby is born and how we can best support you. Together we will create a postpartum plan including a schedule of when you anticipate needing our support. We provide full access to our personal lending library of books, as well as unlimited phone (text) and email support from time of hire until our final postpartum visit.

Once your baby arrives, we will schedule our postpartum shifts according to your anticipated needs. Our postpartum visits include many different types of support and will depend on your family’s needs & structure:

  • Breastfeeding and or bottle feeding support

  • Babywearing information & support

  • Light household tasks & laundry

  • Meal preparation & cooking

  • Grocery pickup

  • Newborn supervision, bathing, feeding & care

  • Support for siblings & fur babies

  • Resources & references for anything beyond our scope
