Postpartum Doula Services
What does a postpartum doula do?
Welcoming a new baby into the family is an incredibly exciting time that can also come with its challenges. Whether this is baby number one or five, your family dynamic is about to shift and it’s so normal to need some extra support for each member of the family during this transition. Although it hasn’t always ben this way, it is very common and necessary for both partners to work to earn an income, and many people live far away from their extended family and support people. These dynamics can make it really challenging for young families and creates a huge support-gap for new parents — which is where postpartum doulas come in. We fill this gap in care by providing hands-on, non-judgmental support, and encouragement to new parents. As postpartum doulas, we are trained in postpartum adjustment, newborn characteristics, care, feeding and development, as well as the promotion of parent-infant bonding.
Our goal is to always provide education and encouragement for your family in developing and implementing your own unique parenting style through validation and support of your intuitive ability to nurture your baby.
Here are some of the ways we support families in their postpartum time:
Breastfeeding/feeding support
Assisting you with bathing, changing, swaddling, and holding your baby
Spend time with older sibling(s)
Light household tasks such as laundry support
Encourage and create time for rest
Prep/cook meals as well as offer nutritional guidance
Shop for or pick up groceries
Run errands essential to the family
Offer referrals for services outside of our scope practice (i.e. Lactation consultants, body workers, physical therapists, nutritionists, parenting groups, counselors, etc.)
Since each family’s needs are different, there is space for us to add specific tasks that are important to each family that are agreed upon by both parties.
